Thanks to this collaborative effort, over 80 children in families who have recently experienced homelessness will have gifts to open for the holidays. Even after being housed, financial and emotional stress can dampen holiday cheer and make purchasing necessities – let alone gifts – difficult or impossible. The Angel Tree project creates an opportunity for community members to share their compassion and generosity to bring the magic of the holidays to these families and children.
For almost three years, David slept most nights in a shed without any electricity or running water. On nights that were too cold to stay in the shed, he slept in his car underneath the Socastee Bridge.
The Smith family came to us on a hot day at the end of June 2017. Sophia, a veteran, was parked in her van at ECHO’s front door waiting for us to open. She was accompanied by her mom, her disabled adult sister, her two daughters (ages 7 & 4) and the family pet, a cat. All 5 of them and the cat were living in their van.
